What We Did: Managed the development, submission and approval of a full-size project to the Global Environment Facility for the US$ 105M UNEP-supported, GEF-financed project “Enhancing the Conservation Effectiveness of Seagrass Ecosystems Supporting Globally Significant Populations of Dugong Across the Indian and Pacific Ocean Basins”, subsequently approved for implementation in July 2014. Interamna also provided transition management services during the project’s inception phase and its role included program and project planning, monitoring and control and both internal and external stakeholder communications.
Objective: The objective of the Dugong and Seagrass Conservation project is to promote the conservation and sustainable use of dugongs and their seagrass habitats in priority areas across the Indian and Pacific Ocean basins. The project aims to address the main threats to dugongs and seagrass, such as unsustainable fishing practices, habitat degradation, and bycatch, through the implementation of effective conservation measures, community-based initiatives, and awareness-raising activities. Additionally, the project seeks to improve the knowledge base and capacity for dugong and seagrass conservation, supporting research, monitoring, and capacity building efforts in partner countries.
