What We Did: Sole consultant carrying out mid-term project review/evaluation for Phase 1 of the planetGOLD program. The approach consisted of consultations and interviews institutions, stakeholders and beneficiaries, analysis and evaluation of ASGM finance tools, analysis and assessment of core criteria of strategic relevance, effectiveness, efficiency, impacts, sustainability, coherence with policies, as well as presentation of initial findings and a draft and final report with recommendations, together with articulation suggested best practices and lessons learned.
Objective: The US$ 25.5M UNEP-supported, GEF-financed planetGOLD program aims to reduce the use of mercury in the artisanal and small-scale gold mining sector and improve the livelihoods of the workers involved in this sector. The program seeks to promote the adoption of more sustainable practices in ASGM, including the use of non-mercury technologies, the formalization of the sector, and the implementation of better social and environmental practices. Ultimately, the program seeks to reduce the negative environmental and health impacts associated with mercury use in ASGM and promote a more responsible and sustainable gold mining sector.
