What We Did: Managed the development and submission of a business case to the Global Environment Facility for the US$ 17M UNDP-supported, GEF-financed project “Modernizing the National System of Protected Areas in Iran”.
Objective: The objective of the project was to modernize Iran’s Protected Area system through supportive legislation and policies and to introduce new and innovative sustainable financing models towards more effective management and connectivity of the Global Protected Area Estate through integrated business planning and community co-management. The project also sought to engage the private sector to discover and provide new revenue streams and financing for conservation efforts, particularly towards reducing threats to flagship species, including the Asiatic cheetah, Persian leopard and goitered gazelle in Golestan National Park and Miandasht Wildlife Refuge.
